Remembering Ten Heroes

7 October, 2015

The courage and bravery of 10 USAF airmen who averted a wartime disaster will be honoured at a special ceremony on Saturday 31st October.

A Service of Remembrance will take place at The Liberator Memorial located at Lieutenant Ellis Way, Cheshunt, commencing at 10.45am to which you are invited to attend.

The American aircraft crashed into a field close to the current St Marys School site during the Second World War and was on route to a raid in Northern France when the crash occurred.

The pilot, Lt Ellis, and his crew remained aboard the Liberator to steer it clear of the town on the 12th August 1944 thereby avoiding what would have been a catastrophic disaster for local citizens.

As part of its commitment to ‘Freemasonry in the Community’ the Hertfordshire Lodge of the Legion, based in Cheshunt, has organised a special service ahead of this year’s national Remembrance Sunday services.

Also taking part will be the Deputy Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, the Mayor, the Provincial Grand Master of Hertfordshire along with many other distinguished guests including an Honour Guard of USAF personnel from RAF Mildenhall.

Military uniform and or decorations can be worn, but not Masonic regalia.

The location of the Liberator memorial is –

Lieutenant Ellis Way, Cheshunt, Herts., EN7 5FB

and car parking is available at St Marys School
