The Founders were made up of London and other Provincial Members, who, encouraged by W. Bro Graham Russell, the First Worshipful Master, created their own Lodge in St. Albans.

The name Prae Wood was taken from a wooded site to the west of Verulamium (St. Albans), where a Belgic tribe settlement had been established about 43 B.C.

The Belgae were believed to have introduced the methods of working in bronze, producing weapons, tools and art objects. Hence the Lodge Crest, bearing the motto 'Festina Lente', which means 'Make haste slowly, be prudent'.
