The name of the Lodge is derived from the Roman town of Verulamium the site of which lies within the boundaries of the City of St. Albans. The Lodge was consecrated, as is said in the preamble to its by‑laws, "primarily for the association of the Old Boys of the County Grammar School, Brampton Road, and of Governors and Masters of the School". The School was later renamed Verulam School and the motto is 'Faire Mon Devoir' ‑ 'to do my duty'.
