Six Brethren of the then five year old Capper Lodge No. 1076, met in a London dockside tavern in early 1870 where they agreed to sponsor the formation of a Lodge to meet at the Britannia Hotel in the then rural and remote district of Waltham New Town. As the proposed meeting place was a mere mile distant from the ancient Waltham Abbey, reputed burial ground of King Harold, the Saxon King's name and crest were adopted by the Lodge.
