Sponsored by a number of Brethren of Hertford Lodge, Gladsmuir was consecrated as the town's first Masonic Lodge at the Red Lion Hotel, Barnet, four hundred years after the Battle of Barnet. "Gladsmuir" was the one time name of heathland at the northern end of the old town, where Edward stationed his men at the time of the battle. The Lodge Crest, battleaxe and spear in saltire on shield, was adopted as a representation of the history of Barnet.

The "History of Freemasonry in Hertfordshire", published in 1893, was written by G. Blizard Abbott, a Past Master of Gladsmuir Lodge.
