King Henry VIII Lodge No. 1757 sponsored the Lodge to provide membership facilities for, persons coming to the new town of Hemel Hempstead, especially those employed in Local Government, and the New Towns Commission.

The name derives from the River Gade which flows through the town, and Gadebourne a small stream.

The Church portrayed in the Lodge Emblem is the Parish Church of St. Mary's, Hemel Hempstead. The Noble edifice of St. Mary is the one thing that has stood changeless here for eight hundred years and more. The mystery of time has passed over it, leaving it, in all its main features. as it stood in the closing years of the 12th century.

An earlier interpretation of 'bourne' is 'bound' or 'limit', therefore it is true to say that St. Mary Church stands within the bound or limit of the River Gade.
