Provincial Grand Charity Steward
Graham King was born in Hemel Hempstead in 1947 and has lived in the County all his life. He was educated at Berkhamsted School and left at the tender age of 16 to enter into articles with a firm of chartered accountants in the City. He qualified as a chartered accountant at the age of 21.As he had not stayed on at Berkhamsted School or attended University he was keen to re-establish his links with the school and was initiated into the Old Berkhamstedian Lodge No 4903, in 1978. He was Master in 1989.
He had previously joined Halsey Lodge No. 1479 which is based at Ashwell House in St Albans and was Master in 1991. He subsequently joined Hertfordshire Masters’ Lodge.
As the Old Berkhamstedian Lodge does not have its own Chapter he was exalted into the Old Albanian Chapter No. 4999 in 1991. He became MEZ in 1999. He was a founder member of Verulam Chapter No 6131 and is the Director of Ceremonies.
He was advanced into Scholars in Amity Lodge of Mark Master Masons in 1994 and was Master in 2004. He was elevated into their Royal Ark Mariners Lodge in 1996 and was Commander in 2005. He was a founder member of the John Burr Lodge of Mark Master Masons and is currently the Master. He has just completed a year as the Provincial Grand Junior Overseer.
His first Provincial Craft Appointment was as Registrar in 1996 and then in 2000 he was appointed as the Provincial Junior Grand Warden. He was subsequently appointed as the Provincial Grand Charity Steward in 2003, a role which has more significance in view of the 2009 Festival in support of the Grand Charity. In Grand Lodge he was appointed PAGDC in 2005 and also holds Grand Rank in the Royal Arch having been Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies during the years 2002 to 2004.
He continues to run a Chartered Accountants Practice in St Albans and as his younger son Sam is only 16 will probably have to be in harness for a few more years! His elder daughter Eleanor and husband Paul have produced 3 delightful granddaughters.
He is a keen golfer and has been a member of Mid-Herts Golf Club for many years and was Captain in 1995/1996. He has always been a keen squash player and despite a recent hip operation is still to be seen on court! He ran the London Marathon in 1996 and 1997 and the New York Marathon in 1999.
He is a sports nut, and with his partner Pam enjoys travel, the countryside, live music, and good food and wine.
