Maltsters, Newspaper Owners, a Union Master and other local business and professional people were among the Petitioners of the second Lodge to be formed in Bishop's Stortford. In 1886, Gladstone was Prime Minister and plans were afoot to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee the following year. The Lodge took its name from the local Parish Church, the main structure of which dates from the fifteenth century. It was consecrated at the George Hotel, Bishop's Stortford. The original emblem of the Lodge (Hertfordshire's Antlered Hart, surmounted by Square and Compass) was later replaced by that shown, the origins of which are unknown.
