Layston Lodge, whose first Master was W. Bro C H Poulton JP, was founded by local business men, taking its name from the local Parish of Layston and was consecrated by VW Bro Canon Frederick Halsey. The Crest headed by a broken pendant bearing two tongued lions rampant, and motto 'Stablis in Fidele' ‑ 'Established in Faith', is taken from the Family Arms of Sir Charles Heaton Ellis, Founder and First Master of the Mother Lodge, Royston No. 4304. The Crest shield, Mother and Child dexter quarter and St. John's Cross are from the Arms displayed on the Hospital denoted by Bishop Seth Ward, now the local Alms Houses. Son of a local Attorney, he became a Lecturer in Mathematics at Sidney College, Cambridge, in 1643 before joining the Church.
